Remembering Suzanne Cali
Lisa Fernandez

Throughout the calendar year, the school is often notified of the passings of beloved members of the Prep community often from a classmate, relative or spouses. Rarely does the alumni office receive notification from so many individuals about the passing of one person as when the community celebrates the life of a beloved past member of faculty and staff.

Foreign Language Teacher Suzanne Cali, who taught at Prep in the 1980’s, passed away April 6, 2023 after a long battle with bone cancer.

A funeral mass for Suzanne was held on Saturday, April 15th at 11:00 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on Queen Anne Hill. In her memory, donations were made to the Joe Cali Memorial Scholarship Fund at Seattle Prep, which Suzanne and her husband Larry had established in honor of son Joe Cali ’89, who tragically passed away in 1985 at the age of 14.

Suzanne taught foreign language classes full-time at Seattle Prep from the Fall of 1980 through the 1987 school year and her children also attended Seattle Prep (Dana ’87 and Matt Cali ’92). Alum Duff Drew ’83 remarked that Senora Cali was “one of the best educators ever. She had that Amazing Ability to make you feel as if you’re on a Learning Adventure, with her as your Trusted Guide, rather than sitting in a classroom. I could go on and on about her and the impact she had on My Life and Educational Experiences. Adios, Mrs. Cali.”

Suzanne’s obituary was published April 10, 2023 by The Seattle Times.
