Origins of a Mission
Dr. Erin Luby

In recent summers, I’ve been fortunate to spend a few weeks at Notre Dame – teaching current and aspiring Catholic school leaders through the Remick Leadership Program. It’s always fun to reconnect with old friends in the quieter months of summer, golf on the quick 9-hole course on campus where I don’t lose too many balls, light a candle at the Grotto or walk around the lakes while dodging mosquitos.

The taste of a Notre Dame summer lingers much longer, for me, than thoughts of pesky insects, a flickering candle or an errant drive. It transports me back to that place I discerned a call to become a Catholic school teacher and leader. And now I’m honored to walk with others exploring their own call to leadership.

This summer I’ve been reflecting a lot on shared, mission-driven, leadership in those steamy midwestern walks across campus. I keep picturing our own faculty and staff at Seattle Prep as exemplars. We don’t need to look far to see our own models of shared, mission-driven leadership.

Mr. Chism comes to mind, always taking care of students, paying attention to who may be having a bad day, and keeping our campus safe. I think of our AP teachers selected to be AP Readers, spending a week away from home in June to read AP Exams so they could help our students achieve at the highest level. Ms. Dold (Arts), Mr. Ellinger (Math), Ms. Healy (Government), and Mr. Mitchell (English) are a few who come to mind. Or Ms. Lovejoy ’97, guiding student leadership development as ASB Moderator and Ignatian Leadership Conference Coordinator on top of her devoted work in the library. I think about this year’s Ignatian Educator of the Year, Mr. McCarthy, an incredible English and History teacher who also developed our Mock Trial program into a perennial state and national powerhouse.

These are just a few examples of mission-driven leadership we’re privileged to see each day at Seattle Prep. When taken together, you see a remarkable composite of shared leadership. One that lays the foundation for Seattle Prep students to grow into the leaders God wants them to be.
