SOPHOMORE TIMESHEET

Current Service Opportunities:
Freshmen year, students began the process of becoming a person for others by doing service to their family. This year students contribute back to the Prep community by doing service to the school.  In order for Seattle Prep to function we all need to contribute to make it a healthy and productive place. The sophomore service requirement enables sophomores to think about the gifts they have and offers them ways to help make Seattle Prep a better place. In addition, sophomores will also volunteer in local community organizations related to Science as a way of connecting service to their Biology curriculum.

Service Requirement

A.   Service to the school: 8 hours of Christian service need to be completed in service to Seattle Preparatory School preferably with a group of other sophomore students to build friendships and community on Prep’s campus.  .

B.   Composting: Along with your classmates you will be asked to help our schools composting program (this will earn 10 hours of service).  For two week periods, you will be asked to manage a composting station on campus.  During lunch over those two weeks that station will be your lunch headquarters.  You will spend your lunch period encouraging the rest of the Prep community to appropriately sort their lunch between compost, recycling, and garbage.

C.   Service to the community: 8 hours  

This is an opportunity to bridge the gap between the first three years of the Christian Service program.  You can do service to an individual or group in need in the Seattle community.  This is an opportunity to find a place of service that you can enjoy.  It will also provide an opportunity for you to grow and potentially lead you into your junior year service placement.  Please consult the sophomore service volunteer opportunities section of the service bulletin board for more ideas on where to volunteer or check out Prep’s Magis Christian Service page on the Prep website at www.seaprep.org.  If you have any questions on where to do service, check in with the Christian Service Director.

Timeline for Service
• Service Orientation September 4th
• Project Proposal October 3rd 
• 1st timesheet due date October 26th (3 hours)
• 2nd timesheet due date Decemebr 7th (10 hours)
• Earth Day of Service April
• 3rd timesheet due date at the end of the semester (16 hours)
• Final Reflection January 2012

Ideas for Service to the School
1. Community Service Club– Once a month service projects
2. Join the Global Awareness Coalition-- Make a difference to the Prep and world communities
3. Peer Ministry– Window class that serves the prep community
4. Music Ministry– Sing in the choir for weekly liturgy
5. Community Ministry Help—Bulletin boards, advertising for events
6. Blood Drive—Assist in promoting, advertising, and donate blood (must be 16)
7. SPREE Auction—assist with this event in March
8. Peer Tutoring—tutor Prep students
9. Peer Note taker—one time a week
10. Host an 8th grade visitor—show an 8th grader around for the day
11. Prep athletic team manager—organize gear and be part of a team
12. Assist teachers—work with a teacher one on one to help with classroom needs
13. Office assistant—many offices can use data entry, collating, general office help, etc.
14. Bulletin boards—many offices and classrooms have bulletin boards that need attention
15. Gym set up for events—ay down protective carpets and set up chairs
16. 8th Grade Speech Tournament—plan, organize, etc.
17. Panther Place sales—Help sell Prep merchandise

Ideas for Service to the Community
1. Seattle Aquarium—work with sea life
2. Arboretum—work outside or teaching about nature
3. Audubon Society–-help protect birds and the environment
4. Bellevue Parks—variety of opportunities in local parks
5. Hospitals—work with children, learn about medicine
6. Humane Society—work with animals
7. Islandwood Camp—amazing nature camp on Bainbridge Island
8. Museum of Flight—take tickets, help with tours
9. Puget Sound Blood Center—Help with blood drives and education
10. Science Camps—Help younger students learn
11. Seattle Parks and Recreation—every local park has work parties on a monthly basis
12. Camp Long Environmental Learning Center—help with environmental education
13. Friends of Interlaken Park—weekly and monthly events held in Prep’s backyard!
14. Seattle Tilth Children’s Garden– Help kids garden
15. Seattle Youth Garden Works – Help create a garden
16. Woodland Park Zoo—volunteer with animals and give directions at the zoo
17. Museums–Help out with tours or education
18. Theater—Be a volunteer usher
19. Festal Cultural Celebrations at Seattle Center—Each weekend there are events you could help out at
20. Seward Park Environmental Learning Center
21. Volunteer Park Conservatory

Grading Requirements
 Sophomore service is part of Scripture.
 Initial service reflection
 Two assignments during the year
 Turn in timesheets
 Attendance at class meetings with Christian Service Director (includes an evaluation and reflection)
 Complete 16 hours of service by the end of the semester or have your report card held (meaning not moving on to junior year)
