Thanks to the generosity and inspiration of the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, Seattle Prep has partnered with the University of San Diego for the past 8 years to promote ethics across the curriculum. In addition to focusing on the inclusion of ethical thinking and decision-making throughout our curriculum, we have worked with K-12 educators from Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada to create a model that encourages the discussion of ethical issues in the classroom and that provides teachers with the skills to foster ethical literacy in their students. Ethical literacy implies that there are important skills that need to be developed in order for us to reason morally and use that reasoning to solve problems.Because we are a Jesuit, Catholic school our efforts are grounded in a worldview rooted in gospel values and our lived experience as a community; an intellectual tradition that promotes recognizing truth wherever it can be found and the practice of examine or reflective living and relating. Everyday Ethics: Most of our ethical decisions happen in our everyday relationships--how we treat friends, family members, peers. Here is a thoughtful article by a high school sophomore that was posted on the tolerance.org website about how she and others can stand up against hurtful and intolerant words and actions.
