Seattle Prep Track & Field       Team Information     FAQ

 What does no cut mean?

This means that no athlete will be removed from the team for reasons related to ability or skill. This is a varsity sport and all school athletic rules apply. This is not a club or intramural team. You can be removed from the team for not following team rules or conduct detrimental to the team

 When and where are practices?

Times and locations will vary according to the event group of the athlete. Prep does not have a track. We share with some of the public schools and are at their mercy. Basic practice time hours are 3:00 – 5:30.Please do not ask athletes to leave practice early unless you arrange it in advance with the coach.  There are also some Saturday practices and meets.

All practices and meets are mandatory unless excused by the coach in advance.

How does one earn a varsity letter?

Be a team member in good standing. (Attendance, attitude, effort)

Qualify for the league championship. (Top 16 in Metro League in each event)

Meet a standard set by the event coach

 Coach’s discretion.

How do you distinguish between varsity and junior varsity?

Generally, our top athletes are varsity. In laned running events, the varsity athletes usually run in the first heat.

Where can I find results for the meets?

All results are listed on athletic.net. You do not have to open an account to view results.

If you click on Metro League, you can see where your athlete stands in the league. You can also do the same for District and State.

How does one qualify for the state championship?

It is a three step process. Qualify for the league championship. The top 12 will move to district. Then the top five will move to state. (Numbers will vary depending on league and district enrollment)

Where are league meets held and when do they start and finish?

See the attached schedule and order of events.

Meets last as long as it takes for each athlete to compete. The more meet help we have, the faster they go. Early season meets tend to take longer as there are a lot of new kids as well as new meet helpers.

What can I do to help at a meet?

Generally we need three kinds of helpers: Timers, measurers for jumps and throws, and people to run field events. The easiest thing to do is to learn all aspects of one event and run it or work it every meet. Your familiarity will make it run much smoother. If possible, grab a friend and work it together.

Do we have to work every meet?

Meet assignments are given by the league. We shouldn’t have to work every meet. However some of the smaller teams do not have enough parental support. When that is the case, we ask our parents to help. It is usually in our best interest as the meets get finished sooner and our kids have quality meet help. This is especially true if the weather is bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some meets only require that we set up and remove hurdles and others we have to do nothing.

How do kids get to the meets?

The school provides busses as they are available. Sometimes there are other school teams competing on meet days. We allow athletes to drive to meets with parental permission. Please make sureyour son or daughter has permission to ride with another athlete and please express to them your wishes. This is a high liability area

When can my son or daughter leave the meet?

We ask that all athletes stay until the end of the meet unless there are extenuating circumstances. It is not in the spirit of teamwork when the athletes competing in the later events have no team support. A basketball, football or soccer player doesn’t leave with a parent after they come out of the game.

Do I have to buy a uniform?

No. Team uniforms and warm-ups are provided. If they are lost or stolen, you will have to replace them. All team gear is numbered and athletes are responsible for the numbers issued to them.

What is spirit gear and do I have to buy it ?

Spirit gear is optional team gear that may be purchased. It belongs to the athlete. It may be                                   worn to school or to meets. Team members are only allowed to wear school issued gear, spirit gear,  or school gear that does not have the name of another team or sport on it to meets. Soccer, basketball, volleyball gear are not allowed. An athlete may be removed from competition for violating this rule.

Is there spirit gear for parents?

Yes this year we will offer Panther Parent gear.

  Invites

What are invites and who participates?

Invites are invitational meets  that happen throughout the season. Some are for the entire team and some have qualifying standards. They are usually held on Saturdays. They are mandatory unless an athlete is told they will not be participating by the coach. There are only a few and they are  a step or more above league meets and are a great opportunity for athletes to compete against quality competition.

Athletes may leave invites after they compete and do not have to wait for the team to finish. Generally the athlete should be at the track ready to warm up an hour before their event. The school will provide transportation as needed but athletes may come directly from home with parents or teammates.

My son or daughter plays club soccer, basketball, and volleyball or flag football. Will this be a problem?

Yes, only if they miss practice or a meet due to the club sport. League and school rules prohibit skipping school events for club events. This is stated on the permission card that you signed. By league rule that athlete may be removed from the team for violating this rule.

 Absence Policy

Athletes are expected to be at practice every day unless arrangements are made in advance with the coach. An athlete who is absent from school may not participate in practice or competition. All classes must be attended on meet day unless cleared with the Athletic Director in advance. Any unexcused class absences will result in the athlete being scratched from competition.

The first unexcused absence will result in a warning. The second will result in being scratched from competition and the third will result in suspension from the team. All athletes are expected to be at practice on the Friday after a meet.

 Is there an awards banquet?

Yes we have and end of the year gathering after the State Championship. We will present awards in the theater and then feast after. If you would like to be part of the planning, please let Coach Scott know ..
