Program Philosophy

Seattle Prep Rowing offers three seasons of activity, with fall and spring racing seasons and on-the-water training during the winter months. Both varsity and novice (for those with less than one year of racing experience) teams compete at regattas throughout the Northwest region and beyond (in locations such as BC, Canada, Ohio, Florida, Boston, and California).

Each student-athlete participates in a rigorous training plan designed to develop character in addition to strength, endurance, skill, and grit. Crews are dependent on the consistent training of all members, so daily attendance is compulsory.

Prep Crew fosters a “team first” mentality, emphasizing the importance of whole-team development and success, rather than isolating a select few. Along with ample time spent in boats on Seattle’s waterways, practices also consist of indoor strength and conditioning training with a certified personal trainer, erging, and running. Coaches provide extra-sport guidance in time management, injury prevention, nutrition, and college recruitment/planning.

Every year, the Prep crew team has had athletes recruited by Division 1 colleges, oftentimes earning significant scholarships. The team has consistently won titles at the NW Youth Regionals and qualified boats to Youth National Championships.

Meet the Coach

Seattle Prep is proud to announce that Mark Davis has been hired to lead our boys and girls rowing program beginning in the fall of the 2023-2024 school year.

Davis comes to Prep with over twenty-five years of collegiate coaching experience, including more than twenty as a head coach.

Davis’s most recent coaching experience was at George Washington University, where he served as the head men’s rowing coach for 10 years (2009-2019), guiding the Division 1, Eastern Sprints program to several record setting performances while managing the annual budget, engaging alumni, fundraising and much more.

In addition to his time at George Washington, Davis filled notable roles at Yale University, University of California at San Diego, University of Texas, University of North Carolina and Colby College.  His coaching career began at his alma mater, Hobart College, where he graduated and served as the captain of the rowing team while an undergrad before moving into an assistant coaching role under coach Jim Joy, former program director of the Canadian national team.

Davis, along with his wife and two children, relocated to Seattle in 2020 where they enjoy the outdoors, access to water and everything that the region has to offer.
